This semester students in J564 have been exploring the art and technique of multimedia storytelling. That’s just a fancy term for telling stories with words, images and sound.
Now, there’s nothing particularly compelling about stories just because they’re in multimedia form. So, students were also asked to explore concepts behind what makes a GOOD multimedia story, concepts such as developing a point of view, asking and answering a dramatic question, establishing timing and pacing.
Then, they were asked to apply these techniques and concepts to tell their own story in a project we called iSpace. The assignment was to identify a space, it could be any space large or small, public or private, and use that space as a springboard for telling a story about themselves.
For most of these students this was their first stab at using video as a storytelling medium. The results are 8 videos that run from 3 to 5 minutes each.
These are personal stories that offer up original points of view that are at times thoughful and whimsical, poignant and funny. All of them seem to deliver some universal truths that speak to what it means to be young and in college with the rest of your life waiting out in front of you.
